Chapter Eight

Eliza ran because she knew her life depended on it.

Her hands were covered in blood, but there was no time to think about that any longer. The sky was dark now, and she didn’t know how long they’d been trapped inside, trapped in the nightmare with…him. But as she watched Luke limp ahead, Joe half carrying Luke and his ruined foot behind him, she knew this was their one chance at escape.

The car was as they’d left it. The doors flung open, their supplies spilling out. That was where Eliza had been knocked around the head so hard that her vision blurred. Where she’d been before she was dragged into the butcher’s station at the back of the supermarket, unable to stop it happening. Where she’d seen the corpses hanging from meat hooks, and heard Luke scream in a way she’d never experienced before…

Like a pig going to slaughter.

Eliza had been sure that Luke would pass out as they made their escape, that he would fall down and be lost to them. But with a cry of pain, he flung himself into the front seat of the car, slamming the door shut behind him. Joe caught sight of an oncoming rotter and quickly dispatched it before heading for the passenger side. Eliza was grateful. She wasn’t sure she could stomach the sight of more blood today.

Eliza rushed to keep up, looking once over her shoulder to see if they were being pursued. She couldn’t see their captor in the darkness, but he wasn’t far away. That much she knew. Their escape plan wouldn’t hold him back forever.

The rotters in the parking lot were drawn to their commotion, and likely the smell of blood radiating off them all. It was time to get the hell out. Eliza got into the back seat, grabbing a lost bag of supplies as she went. She hadn’t even shut the door when Luke started to drive as fast as the car would allow. Eliza was thrown sideways onto the seat.

“Luke!”

“You’re being too slow,” Luke snapped as Eliza grappled for the door and slammed it. Her hands barely had a grasp because of all the blood. And then once they were away, surrounded only by silence, her hands began to shake. She stared at them, the red covering her entire hands like gloves. She felt scared to touch anything, to make it seem more tangible and real. She wanted to believe it was just an illusion of her mind. But she knew where that blood had come from, what she had done to get it on her hands. She could only imagine what Luke was going through in that moment.

Luke…

Eliza raised her head, finally clocking that the boy she had just seen go through hell was now driving their car. She stammered, fumbling for words.

“Luke…you can’t drive like this…your foot…”

“Well no one else can do it. I’m not letting an amateur drive just to die on our way home,” Luke said through gritted teeth. “I’m fine.
